Pisa: Beyond the Leaning Tower, through History and Science

Distance from Hotel: Approx. 25 km (30 minutes by car or 20 minutes by train).

Pisa is one of the most famous cities in the world, not only for its iconic Tower but for a historical heritage rooted in myth. Legend has it that it was founded by Greek refugees from the namesake city in the Peloponnese. Today, it is a world-class cultural and scientific hub, home to prestigious universities such as the Scuola Normale Superiore and Sant’Anna.

Piazza dei Miracoli: A World Heritage Treasure

The heart of the city is Piazza del Duomo, renamed “Piazza dei Miracoli” (Square of Miracles) by the poet D’Annunzio and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can admire:

  • The Leaning Tower: The world’s most famous bell tower, which began to tilt due to unstable ground shortly after construction started in the 12th century.
  • The Cathedral: A masterpiece of Pisan Romanesque architecture in white marble, housing works by Bonanno and Giovanni Pisano.
  • The Baptistery and the Monumental Cemetery: Completing an architectural complex of unparalleled beauty.

Did you know Pisa has three Leaning Towers?

While the one in Piazza del Duomo is the most famous, Pisa hides two other “leaning” towers due to the clay-rich soil:

  1. The bell tower of the Church of San Nicola, located near the Lungarni.
  2. The bell tower of the Church of San Michele degli Scalzi, where the entire church has a significant tilt.
