Siena: The Medieval Heart of Tuscany

Distance from Hotel: Approx. 160 km (2 hours by car via highway).

Siena, perched atop three hills, is a city frozen in time. World-famous for its artistic heritage and the Palio—the historic horse race held every July 2nd and August 16th—Siena offers one of the richest cultural experiences in Europe.

The Treasures of Piazza del Campo:

  • Piazza del Campo: One of Italy’s largest and most spectacular medieval squares, unique for its shell-like shape. This is the true heart of the city.
  • Palazzo Pubblico & Torre del Mangia: Masterpieces of Gothic art. From the top of the tower, you can enjoy breathtaking views, while the Civic Museum inside houses legendary frescoes.
  • Fonte Gaia: The magnificent fountain by Jacopo della Quercia (the original is preserved in the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex).

Faith and Art:

  • Siena Cathedral (Duomo): One of the highest expressions of Italian Romanesque-Gothic architecture. Its inlaid marble floor and the Piccolomini Library are absolute masterpieces.
  • Sanctuary of Saint Catherine: The birthplace of the Patron Saint of Italy and Europe, a place of great devotion richly decorated by renowned artists.
  • National Picture Gallery: Located in Palazzo Buonsignori, it houses the greatest works of the Sienese school from the 14th and 15th centuries.
